Asafo Training Camp

This camp focuses on manhood development in African American boys between the ages of 12 and 14. This is a collaborative effort between EdAnime Productions and the Urban Youth Initiative Project.

About the Asafo Training Camp

The camp is a week-long cultural enrichment, character refinement, and manhood development experience. The objective of the camp is to cultivate warriorhood. Warriorhood is not indicative of crudeness, ruggedness, or recklessness. Warriorhood signifies disciplined, focused, purposeful, centered men (in this context young boys). We will cultivate discipline within, teach structure and order to our Asafos in training. African history and African culture will be the foundation and at the center of Asafo Training Camp (ATC).

Day in the Life as an Asafo

Core Areas of Focus

Character Development

We teach the importance of good character and striving to maintain good character, which we refer to as Iwa Rere. Iwa Rere is a Yoruba concept that means “good character”. We help the boys understand that operating with good character is a significant part of manhood.

Critical Thinking

We foster critical thinking skills within our boys. Critical thinking aids in our decision making, judgement and problem solving skills. We teach our boys to think critically before they act.

Physical Fitness

We teach the importance and benefits of exercise. We help the boys understand that being out-of-shape is unhealthy and puts them at a disadvantage.

Self-Defense

We teach self defense to enable our boys to defend themselves, their families and communities. In studying self-defense our boys learn self discipline and emotional intelligence.
